BIOMEDICAL EQUIPMENT TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE:


1. Establish when the problem occurs. 
Does the problem appear only under certain
conditions? 
Were there any noises, odors, or other unusual symptoms?

2. Isolate the problem area. 
To do this, make some simple tests and observations;
then, eliminate the systems that are working properly. 
Check for obvious problems such as broken wires, dirty connections, and split or disconnected vacuum hoses.
ALWAYS check the obvious before assuming something complicated is the cause.

3. Test for problems systematically to determine the cause once the problem area is
isolated.
 Are all the components functioning properly? 
Is there power going toelectrical switches and motors? 
Is there vacuum at vacuum switches and/oractuators?
 Is there a mechanical problem such as bent linkage or loose mounting
screws? 
Performing careful, systematic checks will often turn up most causes on
the first inspection without wasting time checking components that have little or
no relationship to the problem.

4. Test all repairs after the work is done to make sure that the problem is fixed. 
Some causes can be traced to more than one component, so a careful verification of
repair work is important to pick up additional malfunctions that may cause a
problem to reappear or a different problem to arise.
 A blown fuse, for example, is a simple problem that may require more than another fuse to repair. If you don't look for a problem that caused a fuse to blow, for example, a shorted wire may go
undetected.

The effective & efficient working condition of a certain 
laboratory equipment depends on the following four 
features:

•Maintenance
•Servicing
•Troubleshooting
•Repair


MAINTENANCE
•Maintenance is a continuous process.
•Must include both the Hardware and the Software.
Hardware:
•Cleaning/Dusting
•Maintaining prescribe levels of parameters such 
as electrical, environmental, and others.
Software:
•Reinstallation/Uninstallation
•Upgrade


SERVICING
•Mainly associated with the hardware parts of the 
equipment.
•It Includes:
•Check-ups,
•Repairs, and
•Updating of all physical components

SERVICING
STEPS:
1. Uninstall all physical components starting from power 
connections.
2. Clean dust from the components.
3. Perform a visual check or electronic check as required.
4. Reinstall all components carefully and properly.
5. Check for loose wiring or crack cables.
6. Check if any jumper is missing, if required replace it 
with a new one.
7. Check for physical damages of peripherals and 
replace them if needed.
8. Tighten all internal and external connections.
9. Switch on the power supply and observe.


TROUBLESHOOTING
•Detection and rectification of faults in the equipment.

Repairing means to rectify the problem in the hardware or 
software.
It is an essential part of troubleshooting. 

Repairing may also include replacement of a component.

TRANSFORMER TYPES

TYPES OF TRANSFORMERS

Power Distribution Transformers are used to efficiently distribute
electricity from generating plants to industrial, commercial and residential areas.
Step-up transformers boost voltages up to 765,000 volts for easy transmission,
using small sized conductors. Step-down transformer are use to meet local higher current demands at 480, 277, 240, 208 and 120 volt requirements.

Autotransformers use one continuous winding through both the primary
and secondary on the same iron-core. The primary and secondary serve in the
same magnetic circuit causing current to flow in parts of the same winding. The main advantage of autotransformers are economical construction, and operating efficiency in low ratio situations like reduced-voltage motor starters.

Current Transformers (CT’s) are used when the a.c. currents are too large for measuring instruments such as power company kilowatt-hour meters. They work on the same principle as the clamp-on ammeter by sensing current flow through a conductor without having to break the circuit.

Constant-Current Transformers produce a constant secondary amperage to
a load even though the primary input amperage changes. By using a movable primary coil, air space between coils can be varied. This causes magnetic leakage
between the coils, and varies current flow in the secondary. A typical example of the use of these transformers are series street-lighting systems.
